about

R.I.P. Catalano's, the fleshed out, ruminative, debut release by J. Croteau, is an ode to the past. Spanning the concise 10 song album, there are flashes of friends staying up late watching Springsteen videos, lonely musicians traveling across country, drunken seaside lovers and worrisome loners trying to slink past another panic attack.

The album ventures from 90's-esque pop-rock, to fingerpicked nods at Neil Young- tracked expertly in April, 2019 by one of Croteau's oldest friends. With its first sweeping chord, "Blue June" pulls you into a restfulness, driven with pulsing, overdriven leads; pictures of seagulls and the sounds from a quiet radio riding the waves. While the Thin Lizzy-lite album opener "Salem Mall" steers the album directly towards summer, within it's concise runtime, you find the album doesn't reside in just any given part of a year. Some of the tracks found on the album have been revised, or completely redone, pulled from 4-track cassette demos dating back to almost half a decade ago.

Taking a magnifying glass to his closest relationships, Croteau stretches memories of a lonely car ride, or a shared beer in a backyard into focused, pop songs fraught with melancholy. Although the mood of the album shifts from beginning to end, Croteau stays firmly rooted lyrically, focusing on holding your memories close to you, but not becoming a prisoner to your own longing.
