about

E.P. themes: forward movement, empathy, appreciation.

I've been thinking more and more about how each person in my close circle is important to me for different and similar reasons, and trying to be less judgmental. Not sure if any of that really comes across or not (I've never really written lyrics for the listener so much as for myself). While writing these songs I was mostly focused on using them as a form of therapy for myself, and less as a guidebook or way of influencing the listener.

I wrote most of it in the morning before I had to go to work- drinking lots of decaf coffee and looking at old pictures of friends that I keep hanging around my desk. For the first time I wanted to write about what was going on presently in my life and what I imagine is to come. I have always had a tendency to be too nostalgic and often feel like I'm stuck in the past. I like to tell old stories and reminisce a bit too much. There's a bullshit hypothetical question I see from time to time:

If you had a time machine, would you use it to see the future or to revisit the past?

I'd definitely be a member of the back in time gang.

This sounds like a summer album to me, but I usually feel like anytime I don't record an acoustic/vocals only album they turn out sounding summer-y. For reference Jaws doesn't really take place in any season, Suds is a fall song(right before Halloween), Runaways is a snowstorm song and Melter would probably be a late summer/back to school/early fall sort of deal.

This four song foray was recorded pretty soon after I wrapped up recording the somewhat sprawling R.I.P. Catalano's, which was a collection of old and new songs. I think I wanted to lean away a little from the acoustic based songs and do something a little more peppy and focused. I also knew that Al was willing to play drums on the EP and that might've influenced the songwriting style.

Coulson recorded/mixed this for me (again), across the street in his spare room and we definitely were able to nail things down quickly after finding out what worked/didn't work on the last album.

Thanks to Coulson and Al as always, for keeping me on track and being my sneaky backing band.
